My Obsession with Toys or Why I Hate Those Evil Toy Men

Amazing Spider-Man #367For as long as I can remember, I’ve liked superheroes and comic books. I’m not sure when it started, but my earliest memory of a comic is Amazing Spider-Man #367 that had him on the cover fighting four fake superheroes.

I found the book incredibly cool, you had Solo the teleporting vigilante who gunned down villains, and the classic Spider-Man teaming up to fight off villains who were like some of Marvel’s coolest heroes of the time. Very few details are clear since I haven’t read the book in years, but I do remember I probably haven’t stopped collecting books since then. And I have always thirsted for the toys of these same masked men. To play with when younger, to make comics with and collect now while older.

But for as many as I buy, I secretly and strongly, hate hate hate these toys. Read the rest of this entry »

Penelope Review and Welcome New Reviewer

Penelope Poster smallPenelope was truly a pleasant surprise. I was a little hesitant entering the baron theatre with my 12 year old niece at my side. “Does Anyone Know Sarah Paisner?” – Written by Jennifer Lane

02/27/08 – New York Theater – 7:00 PM – Runtime 1 hour 15 minutes

2 ¼ out of 4 Stars

Based on the premise of a woman who is escaping her old life by reinventing her identity, “Does Anybody Know Sarah Paisner” tries very hard to give us a feeling of the gritty and often insane subculture of Internet dating, message boards, and chat rooms, and the psychopathic games that often are played in the anonymity that is afforded to those who can afford a computer and an Internet connection. Starting out in Ginger and Ella’s apartment, we are given a rapid and often confusing, though masterfully staged glimpse into the mental psychosis of a young woman trying to find a new identity amongst the virtual noise of the cyber world while trying to escape a past and an identity she would rather leave behind. Definitely not for younger audiences, (can a play receive an NC17 rating?), this saucy and unapologetic play runs the gamut from comedic to truly macabre while showcasing some truly wonderful acting talent.
