So Marvel has definitely gone a bit abit Gwen Stacy crazy. Spider-Gwen is awesome. Completely utterly so, and I think most fans would agree her inclusion in the Marvel Universe is a good thing.
Gwenpool? I’m still not totally sold, but it doesn’t mean I’m not enjoying it at the same time.
For anyone who needs a TL:DR version, Gwenpool is a ton of fun, but is she necessary in the long run?
Gwenpool, this Gwen Stacy, comes from an alternate reality where the Marvel Universe is just a company of comic books anyone can read. Also, she’s a huge fan. This gives her a big advantage as she is super well versed on everyone and everything comic book related n the Marvel Universe.
This also makes her seem completely insane as she doesn’t take any situation seriously as she’s “the hero of the book” and therefore nothing bad can happen to her.
Hero is also loosely defined, as since she has arrived, the only way she has had to make money is to take mercenary jobs which typically end with her killing someone.
In this story, she’s actually teaming up with Howard the Duck to retrieve something she stole from the Black Cat of all people and then in turn sold to Hydra, a powerful bio weapon she figured “the avengers would handle.” Howard, making a quick phone call, points out that all the avengers are in space and this needs to be handled now.
What follows is a madcap adventure of Gwenpool, not quite taking situations seriously due to her belief it’s all a comic while she and Howard storm Hydra to retrieve the virus. She does, once more at great risk to herself, and the story ends th she and Howard giving the virus back to Black Cat and immediately buying it back from her.
A Second back up story is a holiday special where Gwen takes on a newly mad upe up villain for the express purpose of allowing her to kill him and then be invited to She-Hulks holiday party.
Gwen fawns over Ms. Marvel and that’s pretty much the end of the entire story.
The first story at least has a narrative and helps expand on the character and the idea that she really is a stranger to this universe and seems out there to everyone due to believing it’s all a comic and nothing bad can happen.
I like the idea of Gwenpool. It is fun. But does it really need a book? Does it really deserve a full book? What I’m not sure I’m endeared too is this version of Gwen Stacy. Gwenpool is a character she becomes when she puts on the suit, but compared to Spider-Gwen this version seems to come off slightly shallow.
I didn’t hate the book. It was a fun read, but I’m not sure I love the character.
IF you want more Gwen Stacy, or are looking for more Deadpool like high junks, you’ll probably enjoy this too. But if not, skip it, your not missing much.
