Marvel’s Mightiest Women finally get their own explosive series! In a secluded corner of the Battleworld, an island nation is fiercely protected by a team of Avengers the likes of which has only ever been glimpsed before… Fighting to protect the small sliver of their world that’s left, the Amazing A-FORCE stands shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to take on the horde!

Battleworld continues with another number one issue in A-Force #1. The A-Force is an all female team protecting and patrolling the island of Arcadia.  Led by She-Hulk the A-Force seems like a tightly knit group of female super heroines and super villain’s.

In a surprise attack against Arcadia by a several mutated and pissed off mega shark, one of the A-Force, Ms. America Chavez, violates Battleworld’s laws in place by Doom, by breaching the border between sections when she eliminates the threat. One of the Thor Corp immediately shows up and takes her away for her fate to be decided later.

This book is mainly setup and not much happens here. She-Hulk argues that America should not be punished, Stephen Strange argues that the laws are absolute and Doom cannot be defied. The others amongst the A-Force soon learn of America’s fate and her mentor, Lady Loki and the others say good bye to her, as the Thor Corp take her away to spend the rest of her life serving at the prison called The Shield. The characters move forward to investigate the mystery of this attack, with the aid of the sub mariners, as it has led to the loss of one of their comrades. But Nico, of the Runaways and America’s best friend, soon finds herself involved in a new mystery with the arrival of the female Captain Universe.

A-Force #1 is a decent book, but not a great one as it mainly serves as setup for future issues. The concept is a novel one of an all female avengers team, even if it comes a year or so after an all female X-Men team book launched. I look forward to see how this makes a difference in the grand scheme of Battleworld and also hope to see some of this carry over to the main universe when it starts back up again.
