Don Jon Review

New Jersey has become a place for great parody and mockery in films and television of late. We can only thank that terrible reality show that took place on a network which once used to play music videos. Don Jon, if you cannot tell yet takes place in New Jersey but feels a lot more like Staten Island. Quick geography lesson, Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of wait for it… wait for it New York City but I digress.

Don Jon in the simplest of explanations is about a man in his mid 20’s with an addiction problem. Which to most this sort of addiction would not seem like a bad thing as it’s an addiction to sex (sort of). See Don has this crazy point of view that woman should behave in the bedroom how they act in porn thus leaving him completely unsatisfied after every one night stand to where he sneaks off to wrestle the good old one eye monster while watching his favorite type of entertainment.

This appears to be Don’s way of life that he truly enjoys until that one fateful day when he feels he finally met the one (Scarlett Johansson). His life turned on its head doing things he never thought he would do and seemingly turning his life around but at a cost.

There is much to be said about Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut. He struck a good balance with handling the actors and the scenes while also putting forth a solid performance. All around the cast was solid with the biggest and best surprise being the performance of Tony Danza. A much different parenting approach from his days on Who’s the Boss? and a welcoming one at that.

Overall the movie delivers some good laughs and is pretty entertaining throughout. It also has some good themes within in it, like finding one’s self through another.

Don Jon is a movie I would recommend for anyone to watch if you are comfortable with sexual explicit content. Though I would not watch this with your parents if you tend to embarrass easily.
