Funny, sexy, heart-wrenching, dramatic, suspenseful… how many adjectives am I allowed to use to describe this novel? It’s just damned cool. I willingly sacrificed my sleep to finish reading this book. If you’re a fan of authors like Laurell K. Hamilton and Kelley Armstrong, and you haven’t yet checked out Kim Harrison, then you definitely want to pick up this author. (Click the more link to keep reading.)
The story, pace and writing style of For a Few Demons More combine to suck you in from the first page. And all the action, suspense, drama and magic are equally balanced by the inner life of the protagonist, a flippant witch who loves hard and has good intentions, but doesn’t always make the best decisions.
This book is part of a series, but you don’t have to start from the beginning of the series to understand what’s going on, or to start caring about the characters.
Rachel Morgan is in a constant state of trouble from the moment she wakes with a demon inside her. She spends the novel constantly trying to get rid of the demon smut on her soul, or at least trying to avoid getting any more smeared on it. This seems impossible – demons keep coming to her, though she didn’t summon them. Meanwhile, she’s trying to balance the relationship with her friend Ivy, a living vampire: she’s attracted to Ivy’s fangs, but Ivy will only bite her if they can mix sex into it. Being a confirmed heterosexual with a boyfriend to boot, Rachel juggles threats to her life while trying to figure out a way around her problem with same-gender sexuality and polyamory – it’s not something she wants to do, but how far is she willing to go to keep both Ivy and her boyfriend?
It’s not all dark and serious. For one, Jenks the pixy lightens up the mood, and variations on “Tink’s a Disney whore!†frequently erupt from him when he’s excited. He’s a central character with issues of his own, but he’s still darn cute.
The novel’s plot is layered with multiple threats and problems, all coalescing into a giant climax. Not everything is resolved by the end of the book, but this is an ongoing series after all.
Pick up Demons when it comes out (be sure to clear a few days from your schedule). You’re gonna love this book.
