A New Guilty Pleasure: The Dabel Brothers

The Dabel Brothers, under the banner of Marvel comics, have come out with several comic titles based on best-selling sci-fi and fantasy authors’ novels. Dabel Brothers Productions has been around since 2002, and their most recent line-up of novel adaptations started in the summer of 2006, but I didn’t discover them until I went to the con this weekend.

George R. R. Martin, Raymond E. Feist, R.A. Salvatore, and Orson Scott Card are only a handful of the great authors whose tales will be (further) immortalized in color. (I hope they pick up one of the three Terrys – Goodkind, Brooks, or Pratchett – if someone else hasn’t already.)

The art style for each title in the new line-up is distinctly different from the rest, and all of them well-executed in realistic style. We already know the writing is epic and entertaining – it only remains to be seen if the comic format can live up to the original tales. With DB Pro’s previous track record, living up to their big siblings’ success shouldn’t be a problem for the new comic titles.

Guilty Pleasures Cover #1I don’t know about you, but I love Laurell K. Hamilton’s “Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter” series, so I’m particularly excited about DB Pro’s Guilty Pleasures title (the one shot of estrogen in this testosterone bath).

I don’t usually buy comics – I’m a manga girl, plus I’m all about the big fat fantasy novels. Even though I already own the original Guilty Pleasures inGuilty Pleasures Cover #2 novel form, I want to go out and buy this comic series. The art is fantastic and eye-catching, the panels well done, and the storytelling is pretty close to the style and mood of the original book. Plus, there’s plenty of ripped, bare-chested, leather-pantsed male vampire for us girls. (I got this poster at the convention and put it up on my wall the very next day!) Not to mention, I know Anita is gonna kick butt. What more can I ask for?
