Hannibal Rising
[thumb:26:l]The continuation of the three other movies, Manhunter (or Red Dragon: The Curse of Hannibal Lector for others), Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal, respectively. The newest feature, Hannibal Rising, is a precursor to the Hannibal Lector we’ve all come to know and love.
This Hannibal starts off during the Nazi reign during World War II in Stalin-run Russia. Nazis come and take over his house once his parents are killed in front of their summer house. After starving for many days, they decide to eat Mischa, Hannibal’s younger sister. Hannibal escapes the house, and grows up in an orphanage, vowing to take revenge on the men who ate his sister.
Thus begins the actual movie, and Hannibal learning Japanese culture and their ancient traditions.
Honestly, I think the movie was okay. For me, it was a little boring. Don’t get me wrong. I thought it was a great movie. It just seemed like the movie was going to end about four different times. When I finally got up to go to the restroom, I was certain we had at least 45 minutes left of the movie. I got back, and the credits were rolling. What sucks is I waited over an hour for a good place to miss some of the movie so I could go pee, and I ended up misjudging and missing the end of what I thought was a pretty good movie.

I wish there was a little more about why Hannibal became a cannibal. Sure, he ate his victims. He wanted the five or six men who ate his little sister to feel the same pain he did when he watched them eat her. Of course, these men didn’t watch him eat the others. Nor did he actually eat them all. One he let drown in a bath of formaldehyde in his medical school.
This does not explain, though, why he felt the desire to eat human flesh. Did he just like it enough? Did he just want it? Did he think it would make him feel better?
And, what was with the Asian aunt, Murasaki Shikibu. Yes, he finally felt loved by family again, but he ended up loving her more than just like an aunt in the end, but he never really gets her, because he ends up scaring her by eating the cheeks of his last victim. ‘Cuz, you know them cheeks. Mmm-mmm, good.
I feel the story left a lot to be desired. I hear many rumors that there is another movie coming out in a few years, but that is currently just a rumor. I wish that there were another movie coming out to tie up all these loose ends.
