Spider-Man Reign Issue #01

[thumb:4:l]What if Spider-Man fell into The Dark Knight Returns world? What if it was a dark world where heroes were no longer were needed or wanted and the ones who did stay behind had lost their will to do what they once did?

Spider-Man: Reign is that kind of story. A dark, future New York where Peter Parker is an old man, possibly even the same age as Uncle Ben, maybe even older. He works odd jobs to pay his bills, still has the horrible Parker luck that causes him to lose them, and imagines going home to his wife Mary Jane, who we are given the impression has died quite awhile ago.

So without further ado, some spoilers.New York City is run by a group of law enforcement officers known as Reign that seem to work for the current Mayor Waters who has called off the upcoming election due to the release of a new computerized protective measure for the city known as The Webb. Peter’s had a shitty day, and finds himself woken up by his old boss J. Jonah Jameson at his door. JJJ delivers a package for Peter and leaves it at his door for him to inspect.

The Reign find Jonah on the street and begins to hassle him. Peter inspects the package and begins to realize what else is in it besides his old camera.

And that leads to the ending. A fairly powerful ending considering the world we are shown and the condition of our main character Peter Parker. But in its own way, a very traditional Spider-Man tpye of ending to a book, basically showing no matter how hard Peter ever tries to escape his past, it always catches up to him.

I like Spider-Man: Reign. Its going to be a 4 issue miniseries that I hope comes out on time and without incident. Pick it up, Kaare Andrews seems to have an interesting story in store for us.
